At what age can I join the Sea Cadets?
Junior Sea Cadets: These are usually 10–11 years old. We also take 9-year-olds who are siblings of existing cadets or children of volunteers.
Sea Cadets: 12 until their 18th birthday.
Royal Marines Cadets: 13 until their 18th birthday.
How do I join?
Contact us to arrange a visit, and we’ll show you around. You can also fill out our application form, and we’ll let you know if there’s a waiting list or our next intake.
Do cadets need to want to join the Royal Navy or Royal Marines?
Not at all. While some cadets go on to join the armed forces, many others pursue careers in various fields. Sea Cadets help develop skills that are useful in all walks of life.
What does it cost to join?
The joining fee is £65, covering boots and badges. There is a monthly subscription of £20 per cadet.
Additional costs for special courses are typically around £15–£20 per day, with bursaries available for those in need.
Do I have to pay for my uniform?
Uniforms are provided by the Royal Navy at no cost, as long as they’re returned in good condition. Any malicious or negligent damage or loss will incur replacement costs.
What qualifications can I earn as a Sea Cadet?
Cadets can earn nationally recognised boating, first aid, and leadership qualifications, including RYA, St John Ambulance, and BTEC awards.
Can I complete the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award with Sea Cadets?
Yes, Sea Cadets offers the opportunity to complete all the required sections of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award as part of the regular activities.
How can I help as a parent?
There are plenty of ways for parents to get involved, from volunteering as instructors to joining the Unit Management Committee. Speak with your child’s Commanding Officer or any other volunteer for more details.
How much time does being a cadet take?
Junior Cadets generally meet once a week, and Sea Cadets and Royal Marines Cadets meet twice weekly for regular training, plus occasional weekend camps or special events.
The commitment is flexible to fit around school and other activities.
Is there a waiting list to join?
Depending on demand, there may be a waiting list for new cadets. Contact us directly to learn more and get your name on the list if necessary.
What happens if my child doesn’t enjoy being a cadet?
If a cadet feels the programme isn’t for them, we’ll discuss their concerns and try to find ways to make their experience more enjoyable. If they still wish to leave, we will support their decision with no hard feelings.
