Joining the Sea Cadets or Royal Marines Cadets
At what age can I join the Sea Cadets?
At TS Fernie in Market Harborough, we welcome young people from age 9 to 18 across three cadet programmes:
Junior Sea Cadets: Typically for ages 10 to 11. However, we may accept 9-year-olds who are siblings of existing cadets or children of current volunteers.
Sea Cadets: Open to young people aged 12 up until their 18th birthday.
Royal Marines Cadets: Open to those aged 13 to 18, offering a more physically challenging, fieldcraft-focused programme.
No matter your age, there’s a place to start your cadet journey!
How do I join?
Joining TS Fernie Sea Cadets is easy. Contact Us to arrange a visit—we’ll give you a tour, answer your questions and explain how everything works. You can also fill out our online application form, and we will get back to you with details about our next intake or let you know if there is currently a waiting list. We recommend getting in touch early, especially for our Junior Sea Cadets programme, as spaces fill quickly.
Is there a waiting list to join?
There may be a waiting list, especially for our Junior Sea Cadets, depending on current demand. We recommend contacting us as early as possible to check availability and secure a place. If there is a waiting list, we will let you know how long it is likely to be and keep you updated on the next available intake.
What’s the difference between Sea Cadets and Royal Marines Cadets?
Sea Cadets focus on seamanship and nautical skills, while Royal Marines Cadets follow a more physical and fieldcraft-based training syllabus. Both programmes share the same core values and offer leadership training, nationally recognised qualifications, and adventure. Both also offer all the same water-based training.
Can I switch between Sea Cadets and Royal Marines Cadets?
Yes – if there’s space available, cadets can request to transfer between the Sea Cadets and Royal Marines Cadets programmes. Speak to a member of staff for more information about the process and what to expect.
Do cadets need to want to join the Royal Navy or Royal Marines?
Not at all. While some cadets are inspired to pursue a career in the armed forces, the majority go on to follow many different paths. At TS Fernie, our Sea Cadets and Royal Marines Cadets programmes focus on building transferable skills—such as leadership, confidence, and teamwork—that are valuable in all walks of life, whatever the future holds.
Costs, Kit and Uniform
What does it cost to join?
To join TS Fernie Sea Cadets, there’s a one-time joining fee of £65, which covers uniform boots and badges. After that, there’s a monthly subscription of £20 per cadet to help support weekly activities and training.
Some optional courses and special events may have additional costs, usually around £15–£20 per day. However, bursaries are available to support families who need financial assistance—just speak to us in confidence.
Do I have to pay for my uniform?
No – uniforms are provided free of charge by the Royal Navy, as long as they’re returned in good condition. You won’t need to pay for your uniform unless it’s lost or damaged through negligence or misuse, in which case a replacement cost may apply. We’ll always help you look after it and take pride in wearing it correctly.
Do I need to buy specialist kit or equipment?
Most specialist kit, such as lifejackets, helmets or adventure training gear, is provided by the unit. If cadets need anything specific for a course or event, we’ll give plenty of notice, and we always try to keep additional costs to a minimum.
We will always point parents in the direction of retailers such as Decathlon, Mountain Warehouse, and other value brands for items like wetsuits and rash vests, as cadets are constantly growing. We also have a good stock of used wetsuits, wet shoes, and other items available to swap as cadets grow.
What should my child wear on their first night?
New cadets don’t need a uniform straight away. Comfortable clothing and sensible shoes are absolutely fine for their first few sessions. Once they’re enrolled, we’ll measure them for uniform and explain how and when it will be issued.
Activities and Opportunities
What qualifications can I earn as a Sea Cadet?
Sea Cadets at TS Fernie have the opportunity to earn a wide range of nationally recognised qualifications. These include:
– Boating qualifications through the Royal Yachting Association (RYA), PaddleUK and British Rowing.
– First Aid training certified by St John Ambulance
– Leadership and teamwork qualifications, including ILM and BTEC awards.
These achievements not only build confidence and practical skills but also enhance future education and career opportunities.
Can I complete the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award with Sea Cadets?
Yes – at TS Fernie, Sea Cadets and Royal Marines Cadets can complete all sections of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award as part of their regular cadet activities. From volunteering and physical challenges to learning new skills and taking part in expeditions, everything is supported within the programme. It’s a great way to earn a respected qualification while having fun and developing independence.
Do cadets go on trips or residential camps?
Absolutely! Cadets can take part in exciting weekend courses, multi-day training camps, and even offshore voyages aboard large sailing or powered vessels. These opportunities offer adventure, independence, and the chance to meet cadets from across the UK.
Can I stay in Sea Cadets after I turn 18?
Yes – many cadets choose to continue their journey by becoming adult volunteers once they turn 18. Whether as an instructor, boating specialist, or even committee member, you’ll bring valuable experience to the next generation of cadets.
Support and Commitment
How much time does being a cadet take?
Cadet life is designed to be rewarding and flexible. Junior Sea Cadets usually meet once a week, while Sea Cadets and Royal Marines Cadets train twice a week, with additional opportunities for weekend camps, courses and special events throughout the year.
We understand school and other commitments come first, so attendance is flexible, and cadets can take part in extra activities when it suits them.
What happens if my child doesn’t enjoy being a cadet?
We want every cadet to enjoy their time with us, but we understand it’s not for everyone. If your child isn’t enjoying the programme, we’ll have a friendly chat to understand their concerns and see if there’s a way to improve their experience. If they still decide it’s not the right fit, that’s absolutely fine—we’ll respect their decision and wish them well, no hard feelings.
What support is available for children with additional needs?
We strive to create an inclusive and supportive environment for all young people. If your child has additional needs, please feel free to speak with us in confidence. We’ll work with you to understand how best to support them, so they can fully participate and enjoy the experience.
For Parents and Carers
Are cadets insured during activities?
Yes – all cadets are covered by Sea Cadets’ comprehensive insurance during any authorised activities, including weekly sessions, courses, and trips away from the unit.
How can I help as a parent?
There are plenty of ways to get involved and support your child’s journey with TS Fernie. Parents can volunteer as instructors, help with events, or join the Unit Management Committee, which oversees the running of the unit. Even a small amount of your time can make a big difference. To learn more, please speak with the Commanding Officer or any member of our volunteer team — we would love to have you on board.
